Waste Wise Raw Vibes Music Festival 2008
The young leaders of the South Gippsland Youth Council wanted this year’s Raw Vibes Music Festival to be a Waste Wise event and were successful in obtaining their Bronze certificate. “It is fantastic to be approached by our young leaders asking to make their event Waste Wise”, said Lisa Benn. It is the first time the event has been Waste Wise accredited. The South Gippsland Youth Council had met on a regular basis to plan the details of the Waste Wise event. A Waste Wise event is one at which yellow bin caps are provided to capture the recyclable materials and red bin caps to capture the waste materials. Approximately a third of all the waste generated at the event, in the form of cans and plastic bottles, was diverted from landfill and recycled. Signage was provided to remind patrons to use the bin caps appropriately, regular announcements were made to remind the music festival crowd that they could help by disposing of their waste appropriately and regular servicing of bins was conducted to ensure there was sufficient bin capacity available. Prior to the event, stallholders were informed about ways they could reduce their potential waste impact by providing food in recyclable materials. The Waste Wise Event Trailer was booked for the day. This houses a convenient number of bins and bin caps for small event use. It may be booked through the South Gippsland Shire Council or through Lisa Benn; a short Waste Wise explanation will be provided by Lisa prior to its use. The Gippsland RWMG implements the Waste Wise program in Gippsland on behalf of the state government. This program is a step-by-step program for events, businesses, schools and community events that assists them to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill. Avoiding the creation of waste reduces environmental impacts. Waste Wise certification is a valuable enhancement for any organisation’s reputation.
