Case Studies of Five Schools in the Gippsland Area

 BAIRNSDALE GRAMMAR
Gippsland Grammar, Bairnsdale became the first primary school in the East gippsland Shire to become Waste Wise.
The School has a population of 100, catering for kinder to grade 6 level. The school achieved statewide recognition by reducing its waste almost by half from 39 to 24 cubic metres to become a Bronze level Waste Wise School.
Students have also been working hard over the past two years to integrate a Waste Wise program through daily practices at the school, recycling paper and cardboard and collecting food scraps in every classroom.
Wednesdays are designated Waste Free and classes are encouraged to reduce their waste impact by bringing their lunch without wrappers, called nude food. The class with the least waste generated is awarded a trophy for the week.
The school has also appointed two environment captains at the Grade 6 level, introduced Waste Wise learning into the curriculum and created a vegetable patch and compost and warm farm.
Councilor Robert Nettleton, a Director of the GRWMG awarded the Waste Wise certificate on World Environment day 2008.

 WARRAGUL PRIMARY SCHOOL
Warragul Primary School became a Waste Wise School in June 2007. It is also a designated Waste Wise support school due to its many achievements.  The school population is 371 students.
The rubbish skip is only collected once a fortnight compared to weekly several years ago.  This means that the school has reduced its waste to landfill by at least 60%.
Each classroom has three bins, one for rubbish, paper and food waste. The food waste is used in the compost bin and later transferred to the lavish garden that is regularly attended to by the grade 3 -4 students.
There is very little litter in the school yard.  A reduced area of the school is marked out for an eating area and yard bins with lids prevent litter being pulled out by birds.
At lunch time a group of students called Ground Force have been provided with bright work vests and gloves.  They volunteer their time to improving the garden and grounds of the school.  This group gives a positive and productive activity for students who benefit greatly from the garden tasks.
The Parent Club have provided equipment for the Ground Force Group and provided information to Prep parents about rubbish free lunches.
The school has also engaged the grade 3 and 4 classes on regular environmental excursions by visiting local recycling companies, both businesses and the recycling depot.
The school actively participates in community events to help promote the Reduce, Reuse Recycle messages.

Waste Wise Network for Schools in Gippsland

The Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group are holding Resource Smart network meetings in all member councils each term to provide a forum for teachers to learn about waste matters.

The meetings are held after school, starting at 4:15pm - 5:30pm once a term.  These meetings are advertised to all Principals across Gippsland.

Please contact Lisa Benn reogipps2@dcsi.net.au for more information or dates of upcoming network meetings.

'Sustainable House’  model -  A Great Resource for Schools!

Sustainability Victoria has given  Gippsland RWMG a Sustainable House model which shows sustainable options for waste, water and energy around the home and a Sort It Out activity which allows students to sort waste into the correct miniature bins.

The Sustainable House is a great tool to engage all years from prep to Year 9.  Students would enjoy the experience of sorting and making decisions about what locations and what bins are the best places to put the recyclable and non recyclable materials.

The house has a bathroom/laundry, kitchen, bedroom/study/ living area and a backyard. The model is a great teaching tool to engage students in practical waste, energy and water activities. One activity is to use magnets and objects to replace the non sustainable features of the house.

Schools that are applying to become a Waste Wise school are entitled to use the house with the assistance of the Regional Education Officer.
