Koonwarra Maintains Its Waste Wise Village StatusIn February 2005 Koonwarra became the first Waste Wise Village in Australia with nine businesses being certified as Waste Wise and also participating in the Plastic Bag Free campaign. The community was also funded to develop Gippsland’s only Waste Wise Trail which is still regularly used by schools from as far away as Melbourne.
Recently five of those businesses re committed to the Waste Wise program, with four achieving certification at the Silver level. Two of the previous nine businesses no longer operate from Koonwarra, the other two are in the process of being recertified. The Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre which is a not for profit community organisation has coordinated and facilitated businesses to become Waste Wise and is a great example of how an environmentally focused community group can provide leadership in a small community.
In undertaking the assessments for re certification the GRWMG found all of the businesses practicing their environmental commitment on a daily basis. The level of state and national publicity Koonwarra receives for its environmental approach has shown that good environmental approaches also makes good economic sense.
