| Koonwarra is a village in South Gippsland approx 2 hours drive from Melbourne. During Zero Waste Week 2004, Koonwarra became the first Village in Australia to become totally Waste Wise.

The Bruthen community have been proactive in their efforts to hold clean, safe and environmentally friendly events. As a result, they recently received two Waste Wise Event Certificates for the Annual Bruthen Blues and Arts Festival and the Monthly Bruthen Farmers’ and Produce Markets. |

Since December 2005, retail outlets in Metung, including the supermarket have banned the use of plastic check out bags. After one year, the community is still eager to find new ways to use the program to promote their community, retail industry and commitment to protecting and improving their environment. |
