The first major audit of Gippsland residents’ waste habits has found that there are huge opportunities to reduce food waste and improve recycling of other household waste. Across the five municipalities audited – Baw Baw, Latrobe, Bass Coast, South Gippsland and East Gippsland – the total amount of food waste generated each week was a massive 236 tonnes and an incredible 12,272 tonnes a year. That is the equivalent in weight to 10,000 small cars. Food waste made up about one third by weight of what households put in their bins. The audit identified amounts of waste by segment, including food, garden clippings, recycling items and residual waste, which is material that cannot be used for anything and must go to landfill. While much of the material is recycled, the majority of waste goes to landfill.

| Gippsland Prepared To Take Action On Environment: Report | More than three quarters of Gippslanders are concerned about the environment and even more are prepared to take personal action to do something about it, according to a major report on Victorians and the Environment undertaken by Sustainability Victoria. The Green Light Report, which included an expanded survey of Gippsland residents, is regarded as the first comprehensive benchmark of environmental attitudes and behaviours of Victorians. According to Andrea Klindworth, Executive Officer of the Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group which manages Sustainability Victorian Programs in Gippsland, the attitudes revealed in the survey were heartening.
